Upgrading the G1v2 with phaseplugs, a new midbass driver and a plateamplifier
We have been testing this speaker quite alot lately and sorted most of it's major issues. At this point in time we are quite happy with how it sounds, and this post will focus on fixing the distortion issues at higher SPL.
We got a helpful hand from Germany 3D printing these phaseplugs for testing purposes only. Thank you Moehren Gras!

Installing them was fairly easy as you could just glue them on, and drill holes for the screws sticking out from the midbass driver.

After installing the phaseplugs and changing the crossoverpoint between the drivers from 800 to 1200hz there was a noticable difference in sound. We could turn it up a bit louder without so much distortion from the BMS 4550. There was still noticable distortion, but less now with a higher crossover point.
We still noticed that the sensitivity from 500-1200hz area was a bit lower than we expected. Decided to switch from the Lavoce WAN 124.01 driver to a DAS 12H driver. The reason? It was super cheap, 4 inch VC, decent motorforce, and a soft suspension. Paid only 100 euro for each driver, but have lately increased 50% in price...

After installing this driver we lost a bit of punch from the 80-126hz area, but gained alot of the frequencies we missed with the Lavoce driver. It sounds really smooth, and vocals in the music had a much bigger presence.

This measurement is done in the garage with some light EQ work on the DSP. Very smooth respons, and overall decent phaserespons. We see the same result in other venues and have done very little changes afterwards.
Making our lives easier we also installed a plate amplifier from Marani. It doesn't look as pretty, but the frame has it's function to protect the amp. Future G1 boxes will be made a bit deeper to fit a plateamp a bit nicer.

It is not so powerfull, with only 2x170w in 8ohms, but it sounds really good. The software also makes sure I can connect the amp to my LAN, monitoring the speakers live at gigs. Very helpful for making sure everything works as it should, and how much headroom there is left.
We have done lots of gigs with the speakers as mains, fills or monitors. A real allround speaker, that a single person can move around without that much of a struggle.

Next bloggpost about this speaker will be about new phaseplugs, and a new HF driver. Maybe a bit more technical than this one.
